A recent study is noting that Black women are dying from breast cancer at much higher rates. However, this news is not new. But, what was startling in a recent study according to NBC News was that most of the African American women who were involved in the study entered the study sicker than their white counterparts.

The study revealed the following:

“They set up a very large study looking at women over 65 who are covered by Medicare. They compared 7,375 black women 65 and older who were diagnosed between 1991 to 2005 to three different groups of 7,375 white patients.

“We matched white patients to black patients,” Silber said. The first group lived in similar places, was the same age and diagnosed in the same year. The white women lived three years longer than the black women, on average.”

Dr. Jeffrey Silber of the Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia noted that black women are showing up to the doctor sicker and are failing to take preventive measures with their health.

This in turn shows that it is time for black women to really step up and take control of their health. The foods we are eating and lack of exercise is hurting us. It is true that we cannot control the genetic conditions or diseases that may transfer through generations or polluted environments we may live in. But, we can do our part to go to the doctor on a regular basis, check our stats more often, eat healthier, and move our bodies more

By taking on a healthier lifestyle, we are practicing self-care and self-love. No one wants to see you in the hospital suffering if you don’t have to, out of breath because you don’t move enough, or pricking your finger if you can prevent it. Personally, these items all scare me, however, for a very long time I didn’t care what I ate or if I moved at all. Although I changed that this yearit is imperative that all black women make it a point to choose healthy living not only for themselves but for their families as well, especially because what we do also effects those around us. For example, if you are the family cook or a mother who cooks for her children or her significant other. We can do better all around with our health.

What I’m not doing is judging you if you don’t think healthy living is for you, but what I am doing is pushing you to reconsider how long you want to live, how healthy, happy, and energize you wish to feel, and the legacy you want to leave. After taking all this into consideration, can you really afford to not take control of your health sooner rather than later?
